DILAN 1990 Review
Not until sitting in the cinema watching Dilan 1990lah, I just realized that the year 1990 was so far behind in the back. I mean, we're closer to 2030 than back to the Dilan era of the same public phone call to Milea. Imagine this for a moment, pliss .. It's not a problem I feel old (old dooo do not want to admit), but seeing what Dilan and Milea do, their daily habits, their courting style that looks magical and very appealing to the audience the teenager in the studio, made me realize:
If aired in the 90s, this film must be selling well as a sweet love story. But, for those of us who watched it in 2018, Dilan 1990 is a unique teen romance. Herein lies the power of the film; he looks different and still relevant to the present condition. Dilan, Milea, parents, teachers, and their friends feel like the people around us. What they do that will interest us, especially Dilan. The little things like crackers and conversations are trivial and obviously not obvious they are romantic in their own unique way. Most of the audience probably will never experience the feeling of nelfon drove to the house gebetan with the stubborn father who could have picked up the phone. Or have not been on a call gebetan but who ngangkat even a maid who did not lose its genit? haha ... Not to mention risking coins to pay for public calls. This film describes it all with a simple, so no doubt to be funny.
The story of this novel adaptation opens with the figure of Milea who has grown up typing on his laptop. He wrote stories during high school, when he moved to Bandung, and became a new student. This story written by Milea is what transformed us into a spectacle. Milea is cute (Vanesha Prescilla looks like not acting on this debut) then become a new prima donna. Many have a crush. Especially the Dilan (although had a doubt the fans of the novel, Iqbal Ramadhan turn his character with enough competence). This motorcycle gang boy has the most different ways of approaching Milea. He claimed to be a fortune-teller. Divine prophecies, strange gifts, and persistence of Dilan seem to be powerful enough. Milea melted. And we are made touched to see their intimate and close. A little bit of the conflict the film presented was when Milea's past came, as did the world of Dilan motorcycle gangs crossing in their romance traffic.

It's almost impossible to hate this movie, it's a very lighthearted teenage ... um, I want to say 'teenage drama' but it does not seem right. Because there's hardly any dramas presented here. Conflict in the story appears in the end and sort of comes so aja. The climax almost did not exist. This of course can be 'meh' for some viewers, especially those who want a challenge in the story. For me, the 1990 Dilan went by. I do not feel anything to this movie. Except maybe a little boredom. I do not know where the narrative goes. Even up to the 100s minute, I have not been able to finger what end game this movie. That is, WHY MILEA ADULT TELLS ALL THAT TO US. Motivation Milea wants to tell him about the guy who sent him the already filled TTS - why should we care about that? Why should we know who teaches him the importance of saying good night every night? Films are very lacking in exploring this. Not without purpose, it's just not very important purpose baseball, baseball gripping. Say, if we look at the adult when they are not together, or finally get married, or something happens to Dilan as an adult, this movie will feel fulfilled. But the movie does not give us any reason to care about what's happening, the reason why we should watch all this apart from the content of the very popular novel.
As a character, Milea kayaks are white paper. Paper that will be written by other figures.Milea almost have no character of its own. We do not see who he is on the inside for half the movie. I questioned the choice of the story when Milea was made a sidetrack for no reason, when it was a good time to show good traits possessed by her character. Milea's self-made personal decisions came in the final half, when she did not follow Dilan in a fight with a motorcycle gang. Movies should revolve around this more. There is one sequence that I think would be very interesting if the conflict is drawn, that is when Milea decided to clean up Dilan's room. This reflects Milea wants to 'fix' Dilan, and I do not think anyone would be happy to be told to change, even by a couple. You do not just go around fixing people stuff. But in fact, this sequence is only used by the narrative as a Milea device knowing Dilan's artificial poetry.
There's a reason why I'd rather read Lupus and Olga than read a novel like Dilan. In Lupus, the romantic sentence we meet is a kind of "There are still pedicabs that will hang". It sounds more familiar, and is more likely to be spoken without diminishing its meaning. Hearing the language of Dilan to Milea, sometimes seems ludicrous. Dilan is already like Gusur combined Boim ama in the novel Lupus. He's baseball is exactly the character who makes the charisma because the movie is never really fair in highlighting it. Dilan hit the teacher because her neck was pulled. He does not come from a broken home family, like most trope. From the poster quote in his room, we can see the motivation why Dilan joins the motorcycle gang, why he is stubborn, but Dilan's morals are never really convincing. We should sympathize with her, but I do not even know why Dilan fell in love with Milea.

There is no layer in the story; in fact this is also a problem in other local teen films. Mostly just about the bad boy who actually baek, dating ama girl baek-baek (which is often a new kid), then there is a love triangle, and there is a girl friend who usually cupu and crush diem-diem. It's a worn-out trope that was used in the romance of teenage Indonesian films. Watching this aspect once in the world there is the name Lady Bird (2017) is a real setback. Most of the time, the film appears to be made competently. They are trying to bring the 1990 period to the screen, and as I said earlier this aspect was prominent in both Dilan 1990. In the early stages alone, the construction of the scene was monotonous; we will often see a scene like Milea again discussing or chatting, then coming distraksi from Dilan whether it is in the form of a letter or indeed present directly, and closed with Milea feel awkward and so sweet music playing in the background. There is also a fight scene, which I think still needs a lot of 'dikerjain' again. The camera is still shaky not clear. Also disturbing some of the use of CGI, green-screen is not really necessary. Similarly, the use of flashback montage that provides a fake sweet sensation, and lowered the audience's memory.
If teenagers seek identity, then this film is an immortal teenager who keeps looking without him ever knowing where the importance he is told. The romance that is displayed is unique and fun, many teens will love this movie. The player was a bit too busy. But the movie should be more of a sight of love. I do not hate this movie, in fact I say almost impossible to watch and say hate. Besides being bored and amused, this movie does not give me anything else because the narrative points never make us really care. Perhaps the urgency was left behind in the 90s. I do not know. I'm not a fortune-teller.
